Marketing Council Seminar

Future Tense Marketing

May 18-20, 2008
Hilton Portland & Executive Tower
Portland, Oregon

Thank you for attending another highly-successful marketing program. The majority of over 180 attendees indicated on the evaluation forms that they loved the roundtable sessions, the team building activity and the special leads management session with CONEXPO-CON/AGG shoppers.

There were a number of other comments on the evaluations (E) that the AEM Education team (T) would like to respond to:

E: Loved the GoGame. Where are the photo and video links Superman Andrew made reference to?
T: Log on to www.thegogame.com/private.asp and use username (AEM) and password (Challenge) to access the photo and video masterpieces.

E: Some presentations aren't directly related to our industry. What gives?
T: You're right. These are what we fondly refer to as "alien" presentations. The executive committee consciously chooses to have the majority of presentations deal with issues relevant to equipment manufacturing marketers. But they also select 2-3 out-of-the-box presentations that give marketers a glimpse of issues within other industries, such as consumer goods, to help broaden their perspective and overall understanding. At this particular seminar, the Leatherman case study and the Tinderbox information also featured local "Portland area" content and flare.

E: Split hotels wasn't good–should be avoided if possible. But location was great, Portland and the whole event theme were excellent.
T: You hit the nail on the head with your two comments. We had little idea Portland would garner more than 150 guests, which is the number that usually attend this program. While we strive to house all guests within one seminar hotel, it's sometimes unavoidable in an instance like this when the hotel could not add rooms to our main block because they were sold out. Hotel attrition costs are expensive, so room blocks are guessed well in advance with conservative estimates. By the time we realized we needed more rooms, the Portland Hilton was sold out over our dates. Fortunately, the Portland Paramount had rooms and matched the Hilton's group rate!

E: It would have been nice to have the agenda prior to Monday morning. Didn't know about breakfast.
T: We agree. The full agenda outlining welcome reception location and time, as well as breakfast location and times, was available as a large red starburst (link) on the MC seminar overview page, and was printed on the reverse side of the welcome letter you received in your hotel folio with your room key.

E. Kudos to all the PICA award winners. I enjoyed the foyer display of PICA award-winning entries and ceremony at Portland Classical Chinese Garden.
T: Thanks for recognizing their good works. The awards are run annually by AEM's Publications in Construction and Agriculture group with the winners announced at the marketing council seminar. The next edition is now open – entries due November 5, 2008. Click here for more info.

E: A number of you made reference to Melissa Abbot's "copy heavy" slides and how difficult was to read them on screen and as handouts.
T: You're right, they were not a prime example of handouts. While we try to coach presenters on setting up their PowerPoints for good visuals (using the 6x6 rule—no more than six lines of copy per slide and no more than six words per line) we aren't always successful. In fact, we received Melissa's presentation the Friday before the seminar and pleaded with the quick copier in Portland to add them to the handout folders! In any event, click this link for Melissa's handouts new and improved in color and two-up to a page.

E: Enjoyed another successful AEM marketing council seminar...see ya in Montreal.
T: Don't forget to check your passport to make sure it will be current for May, 2009 – if you're U.S. based. The seminar dates are May 17-19, 2009 and you now need a passport if you're entering Canada. We're looking forward to it as well.

Who Should Attend

Created by equipment marketing professionals, the AEM Marketing Council Seminar is the only industry specific education program for marketers of construction, agriculture, forestry, mining and utility equipment. It is the annual meeting place for industry marketers to network and receive the most up-to-date tips and tools for peak job performance. If you are responsible for product or marketing management, sales, advertising, publication relations or related communications efforts for an equipment manufacturing company, you might already know this seminar is a "must attend" industry event.

Continuing Education Units

AEM is an accredited provider of CEUs. With verification of attendance, participants will receive 1.2 CEUs for this Portland program.
