Strategic Information
New Internet Initiatives
CIMA continues to explore how to use the capabilities of the Internet to support member companies' sbusiness and marketing needs.
XML Standards Development
CIMA has begun researching the creation of an XML data-sharing standard for construction equipment manufacturers. XML is a flexible way
to create standard formats for sharing data between manufacturers, distributors and component suppliers.
"XML has the potential to really streamline market channel communication in our industry," explains CIMA's Chuck Frey.
"This could help manufacturers handle routine communication faster, with fewer errors and at a significant labor and cost savings
compared to phone or fax."
The Association will first focus on streamlining electronic data transfer between manufacturers and their suppliers and
dealers/distributors. CIMA is forming a standards development committee of member company executives to help define and write this set
of standards, and ensure any standards developed meet industry needs.

E-learning Industry Portal
CIMA is conducting a feasibiity and needs analysis for a proposed Association-sponsored "e-learning" portal site for member
use, to provide a convenient and cost-effective method for individual companies to offer their Web-based training programs to
employees, dealers, and end-user customers.
"Web-based training or "e-learning" is quickly emerging as a strategic business tool that can help
organizations address many key business issues, such as frequent new product rollouts, rapid technology changes that require ongoing
learning and customers who want on-demand access to extensive product support information," noted CIMA's Chuck Frey.
In response to increased usage of the Internet for training, the Association is also exploring the feasibility of offering its library
of safety manuals and videos in an online format. A plan is now under development that will cover usage terms and other issues.
