Working Group Addresses Large Engine Emissions
These emission restrictions also affect manufacturers of forklifts, generator sets, airport tugs, forestry equipment, small skid steer loaders, air compressors, choppers and shredders, personnel lifts and trenchers. |

AEMs Masonry & Concrete Saw Manufacturers Institute (SMI) has formed a special working group to address the proposed federal rulemaking covering large-spark-ignition engine emissions and the effect it would have on masonry and concrete saw manufacturers.
Other Equipment Affected
Large-spark-ignition engines, as defined by the rule, are naturally-aspirated and rated at over 25 horsepower (19 KW).
In addition to concrete saws, other AEM members that may be impacted by these emission restrictions are manufacturers of forklifts, generator sets, airport tugs, forestry equipment, small skid steer loaders, air compressors, choppers and shredders, personnel lifts and trenchers.
The AEM working group has already met with EPA at its emissions lab in Ann Arbor, MI.
Issues of Concern
During the meeting, AEM requested EPA to give consideration to expanding the exemption requirement for engines, extending the compliance time limit, reconsider useful life of emissions systems, and varying emission standards for different categories of engines/applications.
The first phase, as outlined in the proposed rule, will be required in 2004. Phase 2, which will include even more restrictive emissions controls, will become effective in 2007.
AEM submitted formal comments on the rule and will continue to provide input to EPA and keep members informed on the issue. For more information, contact AEMs Richard Dressler at 414-298-4132.
