The Association salutes Emmett Barker, who is leaving AEM after more than 30 years of service in the agricultural and construction
equipment industries.
Special Ceremony Honors Barker
The Association and AEM members have created a college scholarship fund in the name of Barker and his wife, Barbara, in recognition of
their long industry involvement and philosophy of looking and working toward the future.
The AEM contributions were made to the University of Tennessee to fund scholarships for FFA members. Both Barkers are graduates of the
university. AEM donated $25,000 to the fund, in addition to contributions from past chairmen with whom he worked.
The scholarship announcement was made during special ceremonies honoring Barker at the Association’s annual conference in November.
Barker most recently was 2002 AEM Co-President, and previously served more than 29 years as EMI President. EMI and CIMA consolidated
effective January 1, 2002. Last year, Barker had informed the Board he would not be a candidate for the position of president following
the transition and would be leaving the Association at the end of 2002.
Many Contributions to the Industry
“We respect and appreciate the many contributions of Emmett Barker to the agricultural and construction equipment industries and
to our Association,” stated AEM Chairman David Woods.
“He has been a tireless advocate of the equipment manufacturing industry, and played a major role in the many successes of EMI and
now AEM. Emmett’s dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm serve as an example we all can emulate,” added Woods.
Barker Guided EMI Through Changing Times
Barker joined EMI (then the Farm and Industrial Equipment Institute – FIEI) in 1973. Under his leadership, the trade group
reorganized to better meet the changing needs of equipment manufacturers operating in the global marketplace.
This included the creation of new business divisions and product-oriented groups, as well as a re-focusing and strengthening of
technical and statistical programs.
Barker was instrumental in overseeing the transition of EMI and CIMA into AEM during 2002, and just 14 months after the CIMA and EMI
Boards approved the Memorandum of Understanding and Implementation Plan for the consolidation, all elements have been completed or are
in process of finalization.
Industry Involvement
Before joining EMI, Barker was President of the Agricultural Services Association and Public Relations Director of the American Feed
Manufacturers Association. He began his business career in 1960 as Manager of Advertising and Public Relations at Security Mills,
Knoxville, Tennessee.
He served as a Board member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM),
as well as Chairman of NAM’s Associations Council.
Among his many other industry posts is past President of the Agricultural Relations Council, past Chairman of the Farm Foundation,
founding Chairman of the Ag Electronics Association, and first national Chairman of the Ag Day Foundation. In 2001 he was named
Agribusiness Leader of the Year by the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA).
