AEM extends leadership role in ISO
To
ensure that its member manufacturers continue to have a voice in the ongoing development of international design and safety standards,
AEM has expanded its participation in activities of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Safety Symbols
The Association has taken on a new leadership role as secretariat of the ISO committee focused on developing safety symbols (Technical
Committee 145 Subcommittee 3).
This technical committee works on the standardization of graphical symbols as well as colors and shapes used as part of the message in
safety signs and also works on establishing principles for preparation, coordination and application of graphical symbols in both new
and existing applications. The subcommittee that AEM has taken a leadership role in concentrates on the use of graphical symbols on
equipment. There are roughly 1,000 symbols of interest to AEM member companies.
Construction, Ag Committees
This new role complements AEM’s other ISO activities as a leader and participant in numerous ISO committees, subcommittees and
working groups related to construction and agricultural equipment, as well as the Association’s efforts to facilitate
participation in these groups by AEM members.
These efforts provide members with access to communications about standards developments and updates that can impact their equipment.
AEM’s ISO activities provide a channel of communication for its members to hear about changing standards and to find out how to
become actively engaged in the developmental process and provide input to influence standards changes that can affect design and
product operation.
To participate in ISO activities last year, AEM sent staff representatives to meetings in Poland, Spain and Germany as well as hosted
ISO meetings in the Association’s Milwaukee and Chicago offices. The Association also took steps to provide financial support for
direct member participation in meetings.
In 2003, AEM will continue to support ISO work around the globe.
