Year in Review
Public policy initiatives advance members’ governmental interests
In the area of government affairs, activity focused on efforts to secure adequate transportation funding through TEA 21 reauthorization. AEM sponsored and participated in numerous industry “fly-ins” and meetings with key government leaders.
During these, AEM stressed the importance of highway investment to create jobs, improve safety and enhance mobility.
The association also initiated a matching-funds program for the Transportation Makes America Work (TMAW) campaign which advances increased transportation funding (see related story here).
Public Hearings, Other Washington Activities
AEM representatives testified at hearings to oppose the Internal Revenue Service proposal to impose highway excise taxes on mobile machinery. It supported the Healthy Forest Initiative that will improve forest conditions to reduce wildfires, and also continued to urge machinery customers to utilize the capital depreciation bonus for machinery purchases. AEM helped secure passage of this incentive in last year’s tax bill.
The association was very active to help organize regional meetings for DOC’s Manufacturing Matters initiative, and provided detailed recommendations to a DOC working draft outlining the issue.
State-Level Action
At the state level, AEM continued to address dealer contract legislation issues and advanced the adoption of ag equipment lighting and marking legislation to improve safety.
The association also strengthened its relationships with dealer groups to create a better business environment for the equipment industry.
