Goal of one statistical processing system on target; programs assist company benchmarking, forecasting
This year, the association’s statistical reporting program participants reached agreement to integrate all programs and resolve policy differences, which will fulfill a major goal of the AEM consolidation.
The association elected new directors at its annual business meeting, held in November 2003 in conjunction with the AEM annual conference. The Board of Directors works with the association’s officers to set the guidelines and operating policies of the association on behalf of its members.
A Statistics Steering Committee was formed to develop a process for migration of all data reporting programs into one system. The SSC held three meetings to accomplish that task and also began the process of developing a common set of statistical policies and procedures.
The group approved a “cafeteria plan” to facilitate the conversion of all statistical groups to a single third-party processing system. This system will be available to all users by the end of the year, and starting in 2005, all programs will be processed under the single third-party system.
AEM operates statistical programs covering more than 225 products.
Benchmarking Data
In 2003, AEM conducted several market trend surveys to help members benchmark their activities and assess performance. These included:
- Biennial warranty survey of terms, costs and effectiveness;
- Annual wage and benefit survey;
- Quarterly “industry conditions” reports; and
- “Outlook” business forecasts for both construction and agriculture.
New Trends Surveys Initiated
New this year is a “Doing Business with Manufacturers” survey and a “machinery index.” The “business” survey polled more than 700 purchasers of construction, ag, forestry, mining and utility equipment on what they want from machinery manufacturers.
The new construction machinery index is a trends report, based on the dollar value of equipment reported into all of the association’s construction-related statistical programs.
