Technical and safety activities support industryISOBUS manual

In the technical arena, AEM in 2003 devoted considerable energy to proposed diesel engine mission regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

AEM provided written comments, testified at hearings, and conducted briefings with EPA, customers, the media and others to relay member views on the issue.

Other Technical Initiatives

In other technical activity, the association introduced a new online version of its accident press clipping service. It also formed a new industry-wide group to promote harmonization of international equipment electronics standards.

And 2003 saw the initiation of a special Occupational Safety and Health Administration committee to update crane safety standards. AEM had pushed for a rewrite, and two association members sit on the rulemaking committee.

Standards Issues

As part of its commitment to international standards support, AEM participated in U.S. Dept. of Commerce (DOC) briefings to increase governmental understanding of the impact of global standards on trade. And, the association is working more closely with DOC to address standards and regulatory issues related to U.S. trade policy and competitiveness overseas.

Noise Directive

AEM, with the European CECE and Japanese CEMA construction equipment trade associations, submitted a joint position paper to European Union leaders on the EU noise directive and its effects on the off-road equipment industry.

The directive calls for more restrictive compliance levels starting in 2006. The paper outlines lack of technological feasibility to meet these new thresholds for several product categories. AEM prepared additional commentary addressing other directive issues, including economic factors associated with compliance.

New Safety Materials

AEM completed production of a new safety manual for truck-mounted forklifts, an updated rough terrain forklift manual and Spanish language versions of its asphalt paver and portable pump manuals and has a number of other projects under development.
