Free trade agreements promoted

FTA Negotiations

• Australia
• Bahrain
• Central America
• Morocco
• South Africa
• Thailand
• Western

A focus of association public policy action is international trade promotion, and AEM applauds the recent conclusion of negotiations for the U.S.-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Benefits to Manufacturers

The association urges Congress to approve the Australia FTA quickly to maximize the benefits it will provide to American manufacturers and workers through improved market access, allowing U.S. companies to become more competitive globally.

AEM notes that Australia has extensive mining and agricultural sectors and is a historically large and reliable market for U.S. equipment sales. The FTA will eliminate Australian tariffs for virtually all equipment imported from the U.S. when it takes effect.

The association is a long-time supporter of free trade and has worked diligently to encourage fair trade policies and open markets around the world.

Other World Regions Targeted

AEM is also monitoring the progress of other free trade agreement negotiations, particularly one for Central America, which will cover trade with Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Other FTAs under development cover Bahrain, Morocco, South Africa and Thailand.

AEM also supports a Free Trade Area of the Americas that would reduce if not eliminate tariffs and technical trade barriers that association members face in Western Hemisphere markets.

Full details on these trade agreements are available in the AEM website’s Government Affairs section.
