”Manufacturing Matters” federal initiative lauded

Areas of AEM
Recommendations

• enhancing transportation
infrastructure
• reforming tax and litigation laws
• reducing manufacturers’ health care costs
• promoting open markets and global technical standards
• increasing workforce development efforts

AEM has commended the U.S. Dept. of Commerce (DOC) for the agency’s recent report that seeks to improve the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing in world markets, and has requested the participation of AEM and member companies in a new DOC Manufacturing Council.

The DOC report outlines actions the Administration should take to revitalize the American manufacturing sector. The new DOC council will represent a wide range of industries, and focus especially on the needs of smaller and medium-sized companies.

Infrastructure Renewal Cited in Report

In 2003, the association was invited to comment on a working draft of the DOC document and relayed key manufacturer concerns. Several were included in the final report’s recommendations.

These recommendations included enhancing transportation infrastructure, reforming tax and litigation laws, reducing manufacturers’ health care costs, promoting open markets and global technical standards and increasing workforce development efforts.
