Transportation Funding Fly-In
AEM sponsored the opening reception during a recent industry-wide Transportation Construction Coalition fly-in in Washington, DC that included briefings by legislative leaders and meetings with members of Congress. Pictured with AEM President Dennis Slater (L) is Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI), Chairman, House Subcommittee on Highways, Transit and Pipelines, and Vice Chairman, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

The association continued to devote considerable efforts toward the industry-wide push to secure legislation which adequately funds transportation needs.
The association’s messages have focused on the job creation benefits of adequate transportation funding as well as the positive influence of “good roads” on overall economic activity, enhanced safety and improved mobility for business and the public.
Raising the Industry’s Profile
Among the activities AEM has initiated or participated in to raise the profile of the equipment manufacturing industry and its concerns:
- informational briefings with legislators and customer groups,
- one-on-one meetings with key Congressional committee leaders,
- several industry “fly-ins” in the nation’s capital, and
- extensive involvement in the work of industry coalitions addressing transportation legislation reauthorization. These include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Americans for Transportation Mobility (ATM) and the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC).
AEM and Members Contribute More than $666,000
AEM also created a matching-funds program through which the association and its member companies have contributed more than $666,000 to the Transportation Makes America Work (TMAW) advocacy campaign, spearheaded by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA).
As the Advisor went to press, the expected scenario is House passage of its bill, and a House-Senate conference to reconcile differences with the previously-passed Senate bill. The House had called for $43 billion less in funding than the Senate.
