Focus: Ontario farm issues
Dairy equipment is target
of proposed requirements
AEM’s Milking Machine Manufacturers Council (MMMC) recently met with the board of directors of an important Canadian customer group, the Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO), to discuss a DFO proposal that requires installation of time and temperature recording (TTR) devices in all of its members’ dairies by 2007.
DFO’s membership of more than 5,000 dairy producers comprises almost all of the milking industry in Ontario, and more than 90% of these producers use dairy equipment manufactured by AEM members.
Producing High Quality Milk
Among the issues the association raised in a letter to DFO are the relationship of TTR program requirements to members’ equipment performance, warranties and liability, as well as the approval process for suppliers of TTRs.
AEM will continue to facilitate its members’ ongoing dialog with DFO “to promote innovation and free market competition with common and united goals for the production of the highest quality and safest milk for the consuming public,” noted the association.
AEM provides input to Farm Implements Act amendment
AEM was active on behalf of its members during a year-long development process which has resulted in an amendment to the Ontario Farm Implements Act to include new regulations which improve safety for users of liquid manure spreaders.
The amendment covers equipment features such as safety grates for spreader tanks and application of standardized warning decals on new and used manure spreaders.
Safety Decals
AEM monitored the progress of the amendment and acted as a conduit of information between members and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The association provided comments on the ministry’s proposed safety decal updates to help improve the clarity of the decal messages for the benefit of machinery users.
