Technical Update
AEM coordinates vibratory plate/rammer standards development
AEM and its members are actively involved in the writing of new international standards for vibratory plates and vibratory rammers to help customers worldwide compare products more accurately.
The standards will define common terminology and specifications for both types of compactors. The vibratory plate standard will include a standard rating formula. A third standard is planned, to cover impact force testing procedures for vibratory rammers.
The standards development is being undertaken by an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) work group headed by the U.S. (with Frank Wenzel of member Stone Construction Equipment as chair).
The new standards will be based on plate and rammer equipment ratings AEM had developed in the early 1980s, primarily for the U.S. market.
Review Scheduled
The U.S. delegation was charged with developing the first draft of the standards, and AEM hosted the initial planning meeting in late 2003 at the association’s headquarters office.
The draft is scheduled for review by the entire ISO work group at a Chicago, IL meeting in May. The association schedules and coordinates all of the ISO work group meetings.
