Persistence Pays Off for Equipment Manufacturers as Congress Agrees on Surface Transportation Bill
Following months of work by AEM and its members, I Make America and industry partners pressing House and Senate conferees to unite behind a surface transportation bill, Congressional leaders announced late Wednesday they had reached an agreement and expect final passage of legislation Friday. The bill’s investment in our nation’s infrastructure is critical to global competitiveness of U.S. equipment manufacturers, creates market certainty and will contribute to badly needed economic growth over the next two years.
AEM and its members, I Make America and industry partners have aggressively pushed House and Senate conferees to finalize legislation before the June 30 extension deadline and our collective effort paid off, with Members of the House and Senate working around the clock over the past several days to hammer out an agreement.
The legislation that Congress is expected to vote on tomorrow would extend funding for surface transportation programs through September 2014. It reforms transportation programs by streamlining and speeding up the permitting and environmental review process for infrastructure projects and is fully paid for.
While AEM believes long-term infrastructure investment requires a more structured and well-thought out design, this is an important step, and a significant improvement over the serial short-term extensions that have plagued this program for three years.
