Small Spark Ignition Engines
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated stringent new exhaust and evaporative emission regulations for industrial/construction, agricultural and other equipment powered by spark-ignition engines in the power band less than 19 kW (25 HP). AEM provides links to regulations, articles and other documents of interest related to small spark ignition engines.

California Farm & Construction Equipment Exemption-SSI Engines
Equipment types with engines less than 25 HP are presumed not to be construction or farm equipment, with the exception of equipment types on the attached list.

OPEI Letter to National Association of State Fire Marshals
Attorney William Guerry (OPEI) responding to a June 1, 2004 letter from the National Association of State Fire Marshals requesting “the producers of finished [lawn and garden] products, engines, catalytic converters and pressurized tanks” provide technical “engineering data” and any “testing protocols” evaluating the safety implications of installing catalysts or pressurized fuel systems on wheeled lawn and garden equipment (like walk-behind mowers and riding mowers).

In a recent amendment to the Federal Clean Air Act the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to propose (this year) stringent new exhaust and evaporative emission regulations for industrial/construction, agricultural and other equipment powered by spark-ignition engines in the power band less than 19 kW.
