PPI growth for materials lows in March; recent data imply declines; steelmakers expand
The producer price index (PPI) for finished goods climbed 0.3%, not seasonally adjusted (but fell 0.2%, seasonally adjusted) in April and 1.9% over 12 months. The short-term outlook for materials costs looks relatively benign. Steel manufacturers are building capacity. Timken broke ground in late April on a $225 million plant expansion in Canton, Ohio.
