Background

Drift from agricultural sprayers remains a focus of EPA and AEM continues to engage the agency to educate them on industry’s technological innovations to increase precision application.

Status

To help farmers and ranchers mitigate increasing use restrictions on several chemicals, the agency has launched the Drift Reduction Technology (DRT) registry. The DRT is intended to rate drift reduction technologies to allow producers who use equipment with a higher rating fewer use restrictions, such as smaller buffer strips.

While the program is well intended, EPA’s scope of technologies under the DRT is too narrow and doesn’t take into account situations when a farmer or ranches is using several different pieces of technology together.

Position

AEM applauds EPA’s attempts to help producers through the DRT and we are currently working with the agency to expand their understanding of the full range of drift reduction technologies and improve the DRT program so it achieves its intended purpose, including through educational product demonstrations.
