Background

In 2017 The Trump Administration opened a “Section 232” investigation into the impact of steel imports on the national security of the United States. The Secretary of Commerce has recommended a wide range of options to deal with aluminum and steel dumping in the United States, including potentially higher tariffs. Steel is an important input for many members of the equipment manufacturing industry.

Status

The administration is currently weighing the recommendations submitted by the Secretary of Commerce and has sought input from industries affected by steel prices. A decision is expected in the coming months.

Position

Any actions taken to boost domestic steel production should not limit U.S. manufacturers’ ability to source foreign steel from their chosen suppliers. AEM is advocating for a boost in domestic steel production to avoid undermining the competitiveness or quality of goods manufactured in the United States.
