Even voluntary standards can have a big impact on off-road equipment design. Here's a list of new and revised standards that equipment manufacturers may want to keep an eye on in 2016.

The list of standards below are separated by equipment sector – agriculture and construction:


      Planting, Tillage and Harvesting

  • Revised ISO safety standards for tillage, planting and harvesting equipment: ISO 4254-5:2016, ISO 4254-7:2016, ISO 4254-8:2016 and ISO 4254-9:2016. (ISO/TC 23/SC 7)
  • New ISO safety standard for portable agricultural grain conveying equipment: ISO 4254-16:2017 (ISO/TC 23/SC 3)
  • New ISO safety standard for baler wrappers: ISO 4254-14:2016 (ISO/TC 23/SC 7)

Tractors & Self-Propelled Machinery

  • TC 23/SC 4 (tractors): ISO/DIS 20283 Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry – Speed Identification Symbol (SIS)
  • TC 23/SC 3 (safety): ISO/CD 5721-3 Tractors and self-propelled machinery for agriculture - Operator's field of vision – Part 3: Self-propelled machinery
  • TC 23/SC 3 (safety): ISO/DIS 18497 Agricultural machinery and tractors -- Safety of highly automated machinery


  • TC 23/SC 6 (crop protection): ISO/DIS 5681 Equipment for crop protection – Vocabulary
  • TC 23/SC 6 (crop protection): ISO/DIS 5682 Parts 1, 2 & 3 Equipment for crop protection -- Spraying equipment


      Lifting & Handling

  • Revised safety standard for rough-terrain forklift trucks: ITSDF B56.6:2016 (ITSDF B56.6)
  • New ISO safety and user standards for personnel work platforms on rough-terrain trucks: ISO 18479-1 (design/safety) and ISO 18479-2 (user requirements) (ISO/TC 110/SC 4)
  • New ISO safety standard for slewing rough-terrain trucks: ISO 10896-2:2016 (ISO/TC 110/SC 4)
  • New ISO user requirements standard covering additional requirements for rough-terrain trucks handling freely suspended loads: ISO 11525-4:2016 (ISO/TC 110/SC 4)
  • New ISO safety standard covering longitudinal load moment systems on rough-terrain trucks: ISO 10896-7:2016 (ISO/TC 110/SC 4)
  • New topic-specific suite of standards (design/safety/test; safe use; training) for mobile elevating work platforms: (ANSI/SAIA A92.20:2016, ANSI/SAIA A92.22:2016, ANSI/SAIA A92.24:2016) respectively. (ANSI/SAIA A92)


  • New ISO telematics standard that enables equipment users to more easily gather OEM equipment data into their preferred business or fleet management software: ISO 15143-3


  • Revised ISO standard for test method and performance criteria of operator's field of view on earthmoving machinery: ISO 5006
  • New ISO safety standard for quick couplers on earthmoving machinery: ISO 13031

Vacuum Excavation & Sewer Cleaning

  • New SAE standards for vacuum excavation and sewer cleaning equipment: J3106 classification, specifications and nomenclature, and J3107 safety equipment
