Ag BrakingThe wait is over. After countless hours of work by AEM member company experts, an AEM-led coalition of Ag industry trade associations has now released its proposal to update the braking system performance standard for Ag field equipment to ASABE for processing.

This much-needed analysis of existing requirements for tractors, self-propelled machinery, and implements carefully compared the current braking performance requirements found in ASAE S365.9, to the demands (increased speeds, more mass) that current equipment designs and industry practices are placing on Ag equipment braking systems.

The result is a comprehensive, five-part proposal, that has been assigned the project number ASABE X648.

The five parts of this single body of work are titled:

      ASABE X648-1, Agricultural Field Equipment Braking – Part 1: General Requirements

      ASABE X648-2, Agricultural Field Equipment Braking – Part 2: Requirements for Agricultural Tractors

      ASABE X648-3, Agricultural Field Equipment Braking – Part 3: Requirements for Self-Propelled and Special Self-Propelled Equipment

      ASABE X648-4, Agricultural Field Equipment Braking – Part 4: Requirements for Towed Equipment

      ASABE X648-5, Agricultural Field Equipment Braking – Part 5: Requirements for the Interface Between Towing Equipment and Towed Equipment

This project is now going through the necessary steps in the ASABE process, which includes:

- Balloting the PPF (Project Proposal Form) to the MS-03 (Machinery Systems) committee

  • A 30 day balloting period, which ends on February, 16 2018

- Initiating the ANSI PINS process (ANSI New Project) by posting a notice in the ANSI Standards Action

  • Expected to be posted in the February 2, 2018 edition

This work includes many enhancements to the requirements of ASAE S365.9 as well as new thresholds on when brakes are required.
