FCCOn June 17, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took an important step toward implementing the Precision Ag Connectivity Act (PACA) with the announcement of a new task force “dedicated to advising the Commission on policies aimed at delivering connectivity so that American agriculture producers can use and benefit from precision agriculture.” The task force, to be made up of a diverse group of stakeholders, including equipment manufacturers, will identify in-field wireless coverage gaps and policy recommendations to fill those gaps by 2025.

PACA was passed in December as part of the 2018 Farm Bill. AEM’s role as co-chair of the Ag Broadband Coalition was key to PACA’s development and enactment.

The Precision Ag Connectivity Task Force will help shift the conversation around rural broadband from solely connecting fixed locations with fiber to include the wireless needs of agriculture.

AEM encourages all interested parties to put their names in for consideration. Click here for nominating details and click here for the FCC’s dedicated webpage for the task force. Applications are due by July 17, 2019.
