Colombia's national infrastructure agency ANI announced that the modernization and expansion of the Santa Marta airport has reached 45% completion.

The announcement was made during a visit by Santa Marta's mayor Rafael Martínez and other government officials. ANI president Luis Fernando Andrade said it was crucial to show investors and authorities how the project is advancing.

Expected to be completed by February 2018, works are being developed by consortium Aeropuertos de Oriente SAS with an investment of 110bn pesos (US$37mn).

The project will more than double the size of the passenger terminal, from 6,271m2 to 15,413m2, and increase the number of gates to five from two. Currently, gates 1 and 2 are under construction.

Parking lot space will also increase, to 5,742m2 from 2,070m2, and allow for parking at both the surface and underground levels.
