Good outdoor signage requires simplicity, contrast and attention to scale for the most impact, according to Errol Ahearn, vice president, global design at Global Experience Specialists (GES).

"Regarding font readability, you should use the 10/100 rule! 10 inches of letter height for every 100 feet of visibility," Ahearn said. "So if you know you have a location where thousands of attendees could see your sign from a football field away, you should have a minimum of 30-inch high letters."
