To ensure the ongoing support of its members and the equipment manufacturing industry in an ever-changing business environment, the AEM Board of Directors met last week at the AEM headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The board reviewed a full agenda and took a number of actions, including several which sought to advance progress on goals and priorities set forth by AEM’s long-term Strategic Plan.
Developed by the AEM Strategic Taskforce and approved by the board in 2016, the Strategic Plan serves to establish a long-term direction for AEM and helps guide its activities and services. The board works closely with AEM staff to develop plans to implement the Strategic Plan, including an increased investment of resources to help achieve goals associated with the plan’s key result areas (KRAs):
- Advocacy Development
- Thought Leadership
- Optimize Customer Connections
- Driving Data and Digital Connection
- Agriculture Leadership
For the Advocacy Development KRA, the Board took the following actions:
- Supported the direction and increased engagement in state advocacy, including the Right to Repair (11 states), dealer legislation (7 states) and infrastructure funding (8 states) issues.
- Approved the proposed plan for enhanced Canadian advocacy beginning in 2018.
- Approved the staff recommendation to move the AEM Washington D.C. office to a new location in D.C. in 2018.
For the Thought Leadership KRA, the Board took the following actions:
- Supported the partnership with consultant McKinsey & Co. to conduct qualitative and quantitative surveys with industry leaders and end users to identify the impact and opportunities for OEMs from new technologies.
- Reviewed the success of the Thinking Forward events and determined to add more value to regional member events by securing speakers on a number of topics, including additive manufacturing, big data analytics, connected farms and jobsites, as well as the ever-changing workforce.
- Supported the direction for 2018 planning that is exploring new opportunities for thought leadership, including an AEM podcast, member workshops, events and research sponsorships.
For the Agriculture Leadership KRA, the Board took the following actions:
- Supported the strategy to create a stronger voice of the three agriculture equipment manufacturing associations in North America under a common issues-driven umbrella between AEM, FEMA and the AG Manufacturers of Canada (AMC).
In addition, the Board also:
- Approved the Membership Committee recommendation to establish new membership categories and proposed bylaw changes to eliminate hierarchy titles for member categories, better encompass current membership and position AEM to embrace future members as the industry and technology evolves.
- Approved the election of David Thorne, senior VP, worldwide sales and marketing, construction & forestry division, Deere & Company, and Phillip Kelliher, VP, Americas & distribution services, Caterpillar, Inc., to fill open CE Sector seats.
- Introduced and welcomed new Director Grant Godbersen of GOMACO Corp. and Curt Blades, AEM’s new senior vice president, AG Services.
- Recognized Charlie O’Brien, AEM senior VP, AG Services, for his leadership, contributions and service to AEM as he completed his last Board meeting before his retirement.
