John SomersAEM’s John Somers last week joined a delegation of fellow industry leaders in Washington, DC for a roundtable discussion on how the construction industry can utilize technologies to reduce carbon emissions from machinery.

Organized by AEM member company Danfoss, the roundtable was held at the residence of Jesper Moller Sorensen, Ambassador of Denmark to The United States at the Royal Danish Embassy in Washington D.C., and was moderated by Danfoss North America President Rick Sporrer.

“AEM and its members are committed to working together to enhance the environmental profile of construction machinery, supporting efforts to decarbonize the construction industry, and helping advance a more viable world for us all,” said Somers. “We appreciate the opportunity to share the challenges and opportunities facing construction equipment OEMs and component suppliers as they work to meet future market demands while taking steps toward creating efficiencies on the jobsite, ultimately driving decarbonization in the industry.”

Following welcome remarks by the Ambassador, Somers spoke with energy efficiency experts, government representatives, real-estate developers, and off-highway machinery OEMs on how currently available technologies can reduce the carbon emissions generated by construction equipment by making that equipment more efficient and lowering operating costs.

Also discussed was Danfoss's "Roadmap for Decarbonizing Cities" whitepaper and AEM's whitepaper “Moving Forward with Alternative Power: Understanding the Opportunities and Risks for the Non-road Equipment Industry.”

“With construction machinery worldwide emitting 400 metric tons of CO2 annually -- as much as emissions from global aviation -- decarbonizing heavy-duty construction machines is critical to curb global greenhouse emissions,” said Sporrer. “We want to enable our customers to meet their decarbonization goals without having to break the band, and we are investing in the technologies that will support this goal.”

AEM’s Safety & Product Leadership Department, in conjunction with AEM’s Ag and CE Sector teams, work to address ever-increasing global demands on equipment manufacturers to develop machines that are safe, productive, and compliant. Through its many safety, environmental, and global compliance activities and programs, AEM helps ensure its members maintain and grow market access.
