A newly revamped and updated illustrative guide to lighting and marking of agricultural equipment on highways is now available from AEM.

The Illustrative Guide to Lighting and Marking of Agricultural Equipment on Highways resource provides easy-to-understand and visual guidance for the application of ANSI/ASAE S279.18 and the related standards for lighting and marking of agricultural tractors, towed implements, self-propelled equipment, and trailers. Developed by AEM and its Agricultural Equipment Council, the guide can be found on AEM’s Compliance and Regulatory page and in AEM’s Safety Toolkit

“This guide serves as a resource that highlights a common interpretation of the lighting and marking standard for manufacturers, law enforcement, and owner/operators,” said AEM Technical Director Travis Webb, who serves as AEM’s staff liaison for the Agricultural Equipment Council. “In addition, the guide aims to eliminate confusion due to different interpretations of ANSI/ASAE S279.18, and it will contribute to readily recognized ag equipment being operated among traffic, thereby enhancing roadway safety.

Illustrative Guide to Lighting and Marking of Agricultural Equipment on Highways provides graphic representation of the front and rear views of multiple equipment forms, including:

  • Agricultural tractors
  • Agricultural sprayers
  • Harvesters
  • Mounted and towed equipment.

Separate views illustrate equipment wider than 12 feet and similar views for equipment narrower than 12 feet. Other views illustrate lighting and marking as it relates to implement width and length. In addition, the guide includes lighting and marking guidance for equipment that obscures lighting and marking of a tractor or self-propelled machine to which it is attached.

“Since AEM’s Illustrative Guide to Lighting and Marking of Agricultural Equipment on Highways does not cover all possible equipment types and configurations, we encourage fellow members and equipment end users to consult the latest revision of ANSI/ASAE S279 and the related standards for specific agricultural equipment lighting and marking details,” said Lee Roose, senior product safety engineer at AEM member company Vermeer Corporation, and a member of AEM’s Agricultural Equipment Council

For additional details concerning the function and operation of lighting and marking components, users should refer to the body of ANSI/ASAE S279 and the following: ANSI/ASAE S279.18, ANSI/ASAE S276.8, ASABE/ISO 20383:2017, SAE J588, SAE J2040, SAE J585, SAE J845, SAE J594_201002 and SAE J2261_201607.
